Announcement to turn Matuail landfill into a spectacular eco-park

An initiative has been taken to transform the landfill in Matuail in the capital into a beautiful eco-park and playground, said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md. Abdus Salam. He said that the landfill area will be transformed into a civic recreation center through modern waste management, eliminating the ever-present stench and pollution.
He made these remarks while visiting the Matuail landfill area on Monday afternoon. Later, he inaugurated a new compost plant set up there.
He was accompanied by former Deputy Mayor Nabiullah Nabi, local political leaders and senior officials.
The DSCC administrator said that an agreement has been signed with a Korean private company to convert the 3,200-3,500 tons of waste collected daily at the landfill into valuable resources. The work on this project will begin after the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. Through this, it will be possible to process the waste and produce gas, electricity and fertilizer instead of dumping it.
He said that the compost plant inaugurated today has a target of producing 20 tons of organic fertilizer from 100 tons of household biodegradable waste per day. If successful, its scale will be further expanded, which will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the city corporation’s revenue.
The administrator said that to prevent frequent fires in the landfill, activities have been undertaken to install water hydrants at 40 points across 181 acres of land and to construct permanent reservoirs with water lines. Six new portable pumps have been purchased for emergency fire extinguishing.
He added that the fire is mainly caused by methane gas generated from the garbage pile. Currently, about 40 percent of the work of covering the garbage with soil has been completed, which is playing an effective role in controlling the stench and fire.
Expressing regret for the suffering of the people, the administrator said, “As per the instructions of the Honorable Prime Minister, we are working to make Dhaka a ‘Clean City, Green City’. The work of transforming this area into a beautiful and safe environment will begin very soon.”
