Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has achieved a new milestone in its effort to transform waste management into a resource-driven system.
On Wednesday (October 15), Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain inaugurated the “Gas Well Test Boring” at the Halishahar Anandabazar landfill site.
After the inauguration, the Mayor said, “There is no alternative to turning waste into a resource to reduce waterlogging and prevent environmental pollution. Through this project, we aim to make Chattogram a clean, green, and healthy city.”
He further stated, “Since taking office as Mayor, I have been determined to find ways to turn the city’s waste into valuable resources. Residents of Halishahar have been suffering from odor and pollution for years. With the implementation of this project, we will not only protect the environment but also ensure energy security through biogas production from waste.”
The Mayor announced that under the City Corporation’s “Waste to Energy” project, biogas production has begun on a trial basis for the first time in Chattogram. He expressed hope that if the test boring is successful, the project will be fully operational by December or January, and citizens will receive waste management services free of charge.
Dr. Shahadat Hossain added, “Every day, around 3,000 metric tons of waste are generated in Chattogram city, of which the City Corporation collects about 2,200 tons. The remaining waste ends up in drains and canals, causing waterlogging and pollution. Therefore, through a door-to-door collection program, we aim to ensure 100% waste collection.”
He also urged the public not to dump waste into drains or canals, saying, “A little awareness can make our city clean and beautiful. Once this project is implemented, it will become Bangladesh’s first biogas project, playing a vital role in transforming Chattogram into an environmentally friendly, modern, and sustainable city.”
Present at the event were CCC Secretary Md. Ashraful Amin, Chief Cleanliness Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, politician Alhaj M.A. Aziz, Hanif Saudagar, B&F Company Limited Chief C.W. Park, Director Major Nasim Uddin, Director Engineer Tanim, Project In-Charge Advocate Tarannum Binta Nasim, former Councilor Hasan Murad, as well as local dignitaries and sanitation workers.
